Atmane knocked out by world No. 537 in Umag second round
Terence Atmane will not compete in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Umag. After his victory against Dusan Lajovic, a former Masters 1000 finalist on clay, the Frenchman faced a second-round match against 22-year-old qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz.
Ranked 537th in the world, the Spaniard had defeated Jacquet and Pellegrino to enter the main draw before overpowering Kamil Majchrzak in the previous round. A former world No. 131 on the ATP tour, Llamas Ruiz confirmed his strong form after the win against the Pole.
Greatly aided by his opponent’s 32 unforced errors, the Jerez de la Frontera native ultimately prevailed in straight sets (6-3, 6-3 in 1h17) to reach his first ATP quarterfinal in over a year—since his defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at the same stage in Estoril.
Absent from the tour for the entire second half of last season, Llamas Ruiz resumed competition earlier this year on the Challenger circuit. For a spot in the semifinals, he will face world No. 51 Camilo Ugo Carabelli, who defeated Francesco Passaro in his opening match earlier today (6-7, 6-2, 6-3).
