Badosa, suffering from a back injury, withdraws in the quarter-finals in Mérida

Second seed in the WTA 500 tournament in Mérida, Paula Badosa will not see the semi-finals. The Spaniard, ranked 11th in the world, was forced to withdraw during her quarter-final match against Daria Saville.
After easily winning the first set 6-1, Badosa then received treatment for her back.
The former world number 2 had already suffered from back issues during the 2023 season.
Following her withdrawal in the second round of Wimbledon against Marta Kostyuk that year, Badosa did not play another match for the rest of the year before making a dramatic comeback in 2024, highlighted by a quarter-final at the US Open, and breaking back into the top 10 in early 2025 after reaching the semi-finals in Melbourne.
Badosa left the center court in tears in Mérida after throwing in the towel (1-6, 5-3 ret.). If her back injury relapse is confirmed, her participation in the WTA 1000 at Indian Wells could be greatly jeopardized.
Winner of the California tournament in 2021, Paula Badosa was unable to participate in the event organized in the American desert last year.
After benefiting from Badosa's withdrawal, Saville advanced to the semi-finals in Mexico, where she will face Emiliana Arango, who defeated Rebecca Sramkova (5-7, 6-3, 6-0).
The other semi-final match will feature the top seed, Emma Navarro (who eliminated Zeynep Sonmez, the defending champion in Mérida), against Elina Avanesyan.
