Badosa wins the clash against Osaka and reassures herself at Roland Garros
It was undoubtedly one of the matchups to follow in the first round of the women's tournament at Roland Garros. Former world number one, Naomi Osaka faced Paula Badosa, the 10th seed in Paris.
The two players faced each other for the first time, but the main question in this match concerned the health condition of the Spaniard, who has been dealing with a recurring back injury for the past two years and has only played one clay tournament this season in Strasbourg last week.
On the Court Philippe-Chatrier, the highly anticipated battle took place, and neither player managed to take control on return until the end of the set, where Badosa served for the set at 6-5, only to see the Japanese player break back immediately.
In the tie-break, Osaka quickly took the lead and gained the advantage after a well-controlled tie-break, winning 7 points to 1. The Spaniard's reaction was swift, and Badosa quickly confirmed a double break which she maintained until the end.
In the decisive set, the former world number two managed to hold a service game that lasted about ten minutes to level the score at three games each, before winning three of the last four games to overturn Osaka and claim victory (6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in 2h20).
In a match with numerous winners (36 for Osaka, 27 for Badosa), it was the Spaniard who came out on top, and she will face either Elena-Gabriela Ruse or McCartney Kessler for a place in the third round.
After her elimination in the quarter-finals against Liudmila Samsonova in Alsace last week, Badosa reassures herself on a physical level and seems ready for this Parisian Grand Slam.
