Badosa Withdraws from WTA 500 Tournament in Charleston
Paula Badosa’s physical issues have not improved. Seriously affected by a back injury at Wimbledon in 2023, which forced her to miss the entire second half of the season, the Spanish player—who had climbed back to world No. 11—suffered a relapse in February in Mérida and withdrew during her quarterfinal match against Daria Saville.
Badosa was unable to recover in time to participate in the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells. Upon her return in Miami, she won her first two matches against Victoria Mboko and then Clara Tauson.
However, during her match against the Danish player, the Spaniard once again required medical attention for her back before withdrawing ahead of her round of 16 match against Alexandra Eala. Moreover, Paula Badosa will not be competing next week in Charleston.
Initially announced as a participant in the American clay-court tournament, she ultimately will not be able to take part, as confirmed by the WTA 500 organizers on their social media.
“I’m truly sorry I can’t be there this year. I have great memories from this tournament. See you next year,” Badosa stated in recent hours on the X (formerly Twitter) account of the event held in South Carolina.
