Beaten by Bonzi in Metz, Ruud heads for Turin
Casper Ruud was beaten by Benjamin Bonzi (6-4, 6-4) in just over an hour's play on his debut in Metz.
The Norwegian had arrived in Moselle early in the afternoon, but it was unclear what his intentions were for the tournament.
After just a few minutes of play, there was already no doubt. Ruud had come to honor his presence in the draw, but he never had any intention of winning this match.
For Bonzi, who was never troubled on his face-offs (conceding just one break point), this was the first victory of his career against a Top 10 player.
Now eliminated from the tournament, Casper Ruud can move on to Turin, where he will play in the Masters, which starts on Sunday. Benjamin Bonzi will play his quarter-final against another Frenchman, Quentin Halys.
