Berrettini Joins the Wave of Withdrawals in Toronto
Plagued by injuries in recent months, Matteo Berrettini's ordeal seems never-ending. Hoping to regain his rhythm on grass, the Italian faced bitter disappointment as he was eliminated in his opening match at Wimbledon.
Mentally exhausted, the player had told the press that he might take a break from his career to seriously consider his future. It now appears the decision may have been made for the former world No. 6.
After withdrawing from Gstaad and then Kitzbühel—two tournaments where he was the defending champion—Berrettini has also announced he will not compete in the Toronto Masters 1000 (July 27 to August 7). His last appearance there dates back to 2023.
With the US Open approaching, the 29-year-old’s next move remains uncertain. Last year, he reached the second round before falling to Fritz (6-3, 7-6, 6-1).
