Bonzi advances to the third round of the Australian Open

The first French player to reach the third round of the Australian Open is Benjamin Bonzi.

The 28-year-old, who defeated David Goffin in his opening match (6-1, 6-2, 7-6), was looking to confirm his position in the second round against Francesco Passaro.

The Italian, a lucky loser following Fabio Fognini's withdrawal, had taken advantage of Grigor Dimitrov's withdrawal after suffering a hip injury in his first match.

After 2 hours 10 minutes, the Frenchman finally won in four sets (6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4) to reach the third round in Melbourne for the second time in his career.

In 2023, he was stopped by Alex De Minaur. This time, he will face Jiri Lehecka, who eliminated another Frenchman in Hugo Gaston.

The latter threw in the towel early in the second set (6-3, 3-1 ab).

There will be at least two French players in the third round of the 2025 Australian Open.

In addition to Benjamin Bonzi, the winner of the match between Quentin Halys and Arthur Fils will also have the opportunity to fight for a place in the second week.

In the event of Ugo Humbert's success, there would even be one Frenchman guaranteed a place in the last 16, as the player from Metz would face Fils or Halys in the next round.
