By achieving the double, Sabalenka ends the curse for defending champions at the US Open
It had been exactly eleven years, since Serena Williams' last victory, that a player had failed to retain her title at the US Open.
The American had achieved a triple between 2012 and 2014, and since then, no other winner at Flushing Meadows had been able to successfully defend her title.
But Aryna Sabalenka, thanks to her second triumph in the final on Saturday against Amanda Anisimova (6-3, 7-6), ended this curse that had prevailed in the women's tournament's record.
The US Open was the third most difficult tournament to defend among the ongoing series, only surpassed by Beijing and Indian Wells, as demonstrated by a user's post on X (formerly Twitter).
