I know how much it hurts to lose a final," Sabalenka consoles Anisimova during her US Open speech
Aryna Sabalenka has captured the fourth Grand Slam of her career after defeating Amanda Anisimova (6-3, 7-6) in the US Open final.
The Belarusian, who was defeated twice this year at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, finishes her year on a high note and solidifies her status as the top player on the women's tour. She made sure to congratulate her opponent during her speech before thanking the audience and her team:
"I have no words. But first, I want to congratulate Amanda on reaching two Grand Slam finals in a row. I know how much it hurts to lose a final. But you will win one—you play incredible tennis.
Congratulations to you and your team for what you've accomplished since your comeback. You'll appreciate your first victory even more after these tough final losses.
I love being here, I love the support from the fans. I feel like over the years, we've built a strong relationship, and you give me unwavering support. The first year, when I saw I had to play two Americans back-to-back, I thought: 'No way. I don't want to play.'
Then, the following year, I felt a bit more support when facing Americans in the semifinal and final. This year, your support was even greater. So I'm looking forward to coming back next year, and I hope you'll all cheer for me. Thank you all for this incredible atmosphere.
(The announcer tries to end her speech.) Wait… I have to thank my team! (laughs) It would have been rude not to thank my team, because I give them a hard time.
Thank you to my team, my family, and everyone who came here from Miami or Los Angeles to support me in my box. I hope to reach many more finals, and you are not allowed to miss them (laughs).
