Collins announces having adopted an abandoned dog on her way to Miami
Danielle Collins was eagerly anticipating her return to the WTA 1000 in Miami. The 31-year-old American, ranked 15th in the world, indeed experienced her best moments in Florida, the state she hails from, last year when she was crowned champion after winning the final against Elena Rybakina in straight sets.
After her elimination in the third round of Indian Wells against Elina Svitolina, the 2022 Australian Open finalist then headed to Miami to prepare as best as possible for the tournament, during which she had many points to defend. Ultimately, it was the world number 1, Aryna Sabalenka, who ended her run in the round of 16 (6-4, 6-4).
This result will drop Collins out of the top 20 on Monday with the release of the next WTA rankings. Nonetheless, the American made a new friend during this tournament. Indeed, on her social media, the former world number 7 announced that she had adopted a dog abandoned on the road as she was heading to Florida to start her title defense in recent days, and she has named him Crash.
“Crash is recovering and is finally out of the hospital after five days of oxygen therapy. His breathing is back to normal, his injuries are healing, and he truly appreciates all the love he is receiving.
He is curious, affectionate, and grateful to have a second chance at life. It was incredibly painful to see a dog suffering so much after being hit by a car and left in the middle of the road with so many people passing by his curled-up body.
I am grateful to have been there to provide him with the care he needed. I have officially adopted him. Once he completes his recovery, he will be going to school. A huge thank you to the entire veterinary team who took care of Crash and helped him receive the best possible treatment,” Collins wrote on her Instagram account.
