Conchita Martinez discusses Andreeva's progress: "It's how she improved so quickly that I liked"
In recent months, Mirra Andreeva, the 17-year-old Russian player already ranked in the top 10, enlisted Conchita Martinez as her new coach. The partnership has been fruitful, as Andreeva won back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells in 2025.
Competing this week at the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart, she dominated her sister Erika via retirement in her opening match. The Spaniard, for her part, spoke about her young protégée's progress and is impressed by her player's level after just a few months of working together.
"Winning Dubai and Indian Wells was... I don’t want to say it was unexpected or that she couldn’t do it, but it was a real achievement, and suddenly, it was like she had a breakthrough and took off like a rocket.
So yes, it’s a bit of a surprise in a way, but what I liked most was how quickly she improved. Plus, after a good preseason where you have a bit more time to work on the things you want to refine, I quickly saw her getting stronger day by day.
Now, I feel she can certainly compete with the best players on the tour. That’s probably the development that surprises me the most," she told *Tennis Up To Date*.
