Corretja honest about criticism against Swiatek: "It makes me feel sorry for her"
Swiatek is going through a tough time. After her positive test last summer and her behavior at Indian Wells, the Polish player has faced a lot of criticism.
The world number two had shared a lengthy Instagram post where she expressed her feelings about recent events.
For Corretja, a Eurosport consultant, the criticism against the 23-year-old player is too harsh. He defends the Polish player and explains the difficulties she must have faced:
"It makes me feel sorry for her because she is a lovely girl. She is a great player, but she is also very sensitive. You can tell that she is suffering from everything that is being said about her.
I completely understand how she feels. I support her because I think she is a genuine and sincere person. I think it's good that she speaks publicly like this, that she shares how she is experiencing it.
Everyone talks and judges too quickly, but who are we to judge? Do we really understand what is happening in the lives of the players?
We watch tennis matches, but we don't know what happens behind the scenes, what they are going through. Iga has had to go through a lot, she went through a very difficult period last year.
But the fact that she speaks like this, that she is open, says a lot about her."
Present at the Miami Masters 1000, Swiatek will face the French player Garcia in the second round.
