Davidovich Fokina defeated Rublev in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) in the round of 16 in Barcelona.
After defeating Wawrinka in the first round (6-1, 6-4), the Spaniard overcame the Russian in 1 hour and 54 minutes (7-5, 6-4), securing his sixth clay-court victory of the season. The 25-year-old had previously reached the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000.
During the match, the world No. 29 hit 36 winners and converted half of his break point opportunities (5/10). He also maintained a 73% success rate on his first serves.
Davidovich Fokina had never beaten the Russian before, ending a streak of five consecutive losses. He will now face Khachanov for a spot in the semifinals.
