Davis Cup: Berrettini brings the first point for Italy against Austria
Defending Davis Cup champion, Italy must do without its star player Jannik Sinner this year, but also Lorenzo Musetti.
These two absences allowed Matteo Berrettini to be among the players chosen to play singles against Austria in the quarterfinals. The former world No. 6, in the midst of a year marked by injuries, managed to bring the first point to his nation by defeating Jurij Rodionov, world No. 177, with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
After an ideal first set, Berrettini struggled in the second, finding himself trailing 5 games to 2. He managed to win four games in a row to get back into the set, before closing out the match in the tie-break.
Italy, the favorite in this match, will attempt to secure its place in the semifinals during the second singles match between Flavio Cobolli and Filip Misolic.
