De Minaur joins Draper in US Open quarter-finals
Alex De Minaur could hardly have dreamed of a better return to competition.
Having left the Australian in tears when he announced his withdrawal from the round of 16 at Wimbledon, the world number 10 is now bouncing back to perfection at Flushing Meadows.
De Minaur took advantage of a favorable draw to gradually build up his power with each passing match.
Although he didn't always play very well, the 25-year-old was able to rely on his increased physical density and renewed intensity.
Against his compatriot Jordan Thompson, he initially dominated proceedings before resisting his opponent's awakening to win in 3 hours (6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5).
Inexhaustible, he will now reach his third consecutive major quarter-final, following his defeat by Zverev at Roland-Garros (6-4, 7-6, 6-4) and his withdrawal from Wimbledon (against Djokovic).
This time, it won't be a member of the world's Top 5, but Jack Draper, a novice at this stage of the competition.
A great opportunity for the man who has never yet reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament.
