Djokovic overwhelmed by emotion: "I put my heart, my soul, my body, my family, everything"
The emotion was intense for Novak Djokovic when, on Sunday afternoon, he finally succeeded in his quest for the one major title he had been missing: an Olympic gold medal. The Serb fell to his knees on the clay court, shaking and crying for long seconds, relieved, finally releasing the pressure he had been holding in since the start of the tournament.
The world no. 2 did everything in his power to add the final piece to the giant puzzle of his incomparable record. But, right up to the end, he feared that Olympus would once again refuse him. A fear he need have no longer.
Novak Djokovci: "An incredible battle. Honestly, when the last shot went past him, it was the only time I thought I could win the match. He kept coming back and asking me to play my best tennis.
I don't know what to say. I'm still in shock. I put my heart, my soul, my body, my family, everything on the line to win Olympic gold at the age of 37."
