Draper reflects on his victory at Indian Wells: "I was a bit nervous"
Victorious on Sunday in the Indian Wells final against Holger Rune (6-2, 6-2), Jack Draper delivered an almost perfect tournament.
With a semifinal win against the two-time defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz, the Brit did not falter in the final and claimed his first Masters 1000 title.
During the post-match press conference, Draper opened up about his emotions before the final. He discussed how he felt before match point and shared his desire to keep improving:
"Winning here is an incredible feeling. I've been watching this tournament since I was a kid. I've seen great champions play on this court. Being able to call myself the winner here means everything to me.
Before the match, you think about all the possible scenarios in your head, you have a lot of doubts, you think you might lose.
Being able to overcome those doubts, to have played the final the way I did, makes this victory even better. The truth is, I was a bit nervous before the match, but as soon as I stepped onto the court, I felt amazing.
I felt a bit tired this morning because of all the emotions from yesterday (against Alcaraz), but I was in the final. I worked very hard to get here, I beat five great players, so it wasn't the time to be tired.
I thought about how we train every day, with my team and my family.
When I knelt down after winning, I tried to look around and savor it all, to feel that intense feeling of being the winner.
I know I don't want to stop here. I still have a long way to go."
