Everyone keeps talking to me about a third consecutive title, but I'm still far from it," Pegula cautious ahead of Montreal tournament
Jessica Pegula has a special fondness for Canada, having won the last two editions of the WTA 1000 in Montreal and Toronto.
Back in Quebec, the world No. 4 hopes to end her two-match losing streak from Wimbledon and Washington. In a press conference, she reflected on those setbacks and her ambitions for this tournament:
"I feel good. I arrived yesterday, and my first training session went well. I have great memories from the last tournaments in Montreal and Toronto. Everyone keeps talking to me about a third consecutive title, but I'm still far from it. But I hope to recreate the same magic as in recent years here in Canada.
Wimbledon didn’t go as I hoped. I was disappointed, but there’s nothing terrible about staying home for two and a half weeks before starting this tour. In Washington, I had a tough start. The match went to a third set against Leylah (Fernandez), but she’s playing great tennis.
I always say this, but I feel more comfortable when the situation is complicated. Here in Canada, the courts are a bit faster, and that suits my game well. Maybe that’s why I’ve adapted quicker than my opponents. Last year, I was coming straight from the Paris Olympics, but my adjustment was very fast.
