Fils mentions Monfils: "He helped me become a good man and grow up"
Arthur Fils has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters 1000. The 20-year-old Frenchman defeated world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in three sets after being down a break in the third set (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
Fils will face Jakub Mensik this Thursday for a spot in the semifinals. During a press conference, Fils spoke about Gaël Monfils, who lost in the round of 16 to Sebastian Korda in a match marked by repeated rain delays.
"I have a very good relationship with Gaël. He has helped me a lot, both on and off the court, to become a good man and grow up. He’s a very kind person, and when I was young, I used to watch him play.
The incredible points he made… For us French, he’s a legend, and now, being with him, sharing the same tournaments and locker rooms, means a lot to me.
I’d like him to keep playing a little longer. I think he still has two or three years left on the tour," he said in comments recently reported by Super Tennis.
