Fils Satisfied with His Progress: "I'm a Much Better Player Than Last Season"
Defeated in his opening match at the Madrid Masters 1000 by Francisco Comesaña despite a strong lead in the first set (7-6, 6-4), the world No. 14 had time to prepare for the Rome tournament. For his debut in the Italian capital this year, the Frenchman will have to overcome Tallon Griekspoor or Miomir Kecmanovic.
In recent hours, Fils spoke to the media and shared his progress over the past several months, which has led him to his career-high ranking.
"I'm very happy to be back in Rome. I have great memories from two years ago. This is where I won my first Masters 1000 match (against Juan Manuel Cerundolo in 2023, after coming through two qualifying rounds). Those are amazing memories. I love everything about Rome.
I'm a much better player than last season. I play better. I'm also a little more experienced now. Of course, I'm still young, so I have plenty of time to play this tournament. Maybe ten more editions or even more. But I feel much better, I feel really good. I really hope to have a great tournament," he told L’Équipe in recent hours.
