It’s already over for Fabio Fognini at the Rome Masters 1000. The Italian veteran, who had announced this would be his final participation in the tournament, was no match for Jacob Fearnley, losing in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) after just 1 hour and 20 minutes of play.
Thus, after 18 appearances in the Italian capital (tying Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, and one fewer than Rafael Nadal), Fognini bid farewell to the Roman crowd. He had reached the quarterfinals of the event in 2018, where he was defeated by Nadal at the time.
Fearnley, who made it to the third round in Madrid, will face another Italian on Saturday—Matteo Berrettini.
