Fonseca wins the Masters Next Gen!
Joao Fonseca. Remember that name. At just 18 years of age, he has just become the second youngest player to win the Masters Next Gen. A few weeks ahead of him is none other than Jannik Sinner, current world number 1.
The Brazilian nugget had an exceptional tournament, winning all his group matches before defeating Luca Van Assche in the semi-finals and Learner Tien in the final on Sunday.
Surprised by an American who got off to an exceptional start, Fonseca didn't panic. Sticking to his baseline and playing as aggressive tennis as ever, he gradually regained control of the match.
Winning the second set after an exceptional tie-break, he went on to dominate the third set and then the fourth and final act (2-4, 4-3, 4-0, 4-2 in 1h28).
Ranked 727th in the world in January, he ended the season in 145th place (up 582 places), with the added bonus of being named the world's best player under 21.
One thing's for sure: Joao Fonseca will be one to watch in 2025!
