Fritz eliminated in the first round by Altmaier at Roland-Garros
Taylor Fritz is the first top 10 ATP player to fall in this 2025 Roland-Garros tournament. The American, ranked 4th in the world, was defeated in the first round by Daniel Altmaier (7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1) on Court Simonne-Mathieu, thus making an early exit from the men's singles draw.
Overpowered by a solid German player, always a threat on clay (46 winners, 37 unforced errors for Altmaier), Fritz never really found his cruising rhythm, despite a surge in the second set. Ranked 66th in the world, the German was opportunistic, breaking serve five times out of eight break points.
In the end, after 2 hours and 41 minutes of play, the American, finalist of the last US Open and the ATP Finals in Turin at the end of 2024, confirmed his difficulties on clay this season. After being defeated in the round of 16 in Madrid by Casper Ruud, he then lost in the first round in Rome against Marcos Giron. Finally, in Geneva, it was Hubert Hurkacz who ended his run in the quarter-finals.
Altmaier, on the other hand, will face Vit Kopriva, who defeated Thiago Monteiro on Sunday (6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7, 6-1). Having already beaten Jannik Sinner in this same tournament two years ago, he confirms his reputation as a giant-killer at Roland-Garros.
He hopes to reach the third round at Porte d'Auteuil for the second time in his career after 2023 when he was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov at this stage of the competition.
