Fritz Surprised by Giron, Another Seed Falls in Men's Draw at Rome

It was a chaotic day in Rome. After the eliminations of Andrey Rublev, Frances Tiafoe, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, another seeded player has been sent packing.
Taylor Fritz, the world No. 4, fell to his compatriot Marcos Giron after two tie-breaks (7-6, 7-6). The finalist of the last US Open and the ATP Finals had only lost once to Giron before—in Dallas in 2022—with four victories in his favor.
Even worse, the world No. 45 had a record of just one win against ten losses against Top 10 players before this match. Trailing 4-0, 40-15 in the second set, he managed to turn the tide by winning five consecutive games before sealing the match in a decisive tie-break, 7-3.
Giron will face Hubert Hurkacz for a spot in the round of 16. After this unexpected defeat, Fritz will wrap up his Roland-Garros preparations at the ATP 250 in Geneva, where Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud are also expected to compete.
