Gauff addresses the PTPA issue: "There are people doing much harder things in this world"
After delivering a crushing 6-0, 6-0 defeat to her compatriot Sofia Kenin in Miami, the young American discussed the complaint filed by the PTPA against the governing bodies.
While she admits not being fully aware of what is truly happening, the 18-year-old player highlights certain areas for improvement in tennis, while remaining measured about the privilege of her profession:
"Honestly, I don’t have much information about this whole situation. I saw a post about it on Instagram. I found out about it at the same time as the rest of the world.
I don’t have any information I can share, but I am in favor of improving the sport and trying to do better.
For me, the most important thing isn’t fairness, but rather a better percentage of revenue and prize money. Also, in the case of women, to be on par with the men.
There are many other things, like visibility, that we can improve.
At the same time, I can’t sit here and complain. I’m a professional athlete. I’m very well paid to do what I love.
The amount of work is certainly less than the price, or the amount of work doesn’t equal the reward, obviously, but there are people doing much harder things in this world.
If we want to compare it to other sports, of course, but if you want to compare it to other things in life, I’m not going to sit here and complain."
Having qualified for the third round, Gauff will face Sakkari.
