Gauff, Collins, Osaka: Results from the WTA 1000 Miami Overnight Action

The defending champion is still roaring in Florida. Last year's winner, Danielle Collins, has advanced to the Round of 16 at the WTA 1000 Miami. The American, who has had a tough start to the year, narrowly defeated Rebeka Masarova.
The 25-year-old Swiss player, who had previously knocked out Donna Vekic, gave the world No. 15 a tough time but ultimately fell short (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). Collins will face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the next round.
Earlier in the day, the Belarusian, who suffered an early exit in Miami last year, benefited from Elena-Gabriela Ruse's retirement after the first set (6-1 ret.). The Romanian, dealing with a thigh injury, also had to withdraw from the doubles event, where she was set to compete with Marta Kostyuk.
Coco Gauff also advances. In a rematch of the Indian Wells third round, the American faced Maria Sakkari, whom the world No. 3 had defeated in California.
In the Florida event, the outcome remained the same, as Gauff secured her fifth win in ten encounters against the Greek player, who continues her slide down the rankings (6-2, 6-4). Sakkari, a quarterfinalist last year, will drop out of the top 60 for the first time since 2018. Gauff will face Magda Linette in the Round of 16.
Zheng Qinwen is quietly making her way through Miami. The Chinese player, who had a shaky start to the season, seems to be gradually finding her footing. The world No. 9 also reached the Round of 16 after defeating Taylor Townsend (6-1, 7-6) and will face a third American in three rounds, Ashlyn Krueger.
Krueger confirmed her victory over Elena Rybakina by defeating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets (6-1, 7-5). Finally, Naomi Osaka is back in the Miami Round of 16. The 2022 finalist has secured her third consecutive win in Florida.
After victories against Starodubtseva and Samsonova, the former world No. 1 came back from a 4-2 deficit in the decisive set to defeat Hailey Baptiste (7-6, 3-6, 6-4) and will face Jasmine Paolini, who benefited from Ons Jabeur's withdrawal earlier in the day.
