Sabalenka Advances to Miami Quarterfinals After Ruse's Withdrawal
Aryna Sabalenka continues her smooth run in Florida.
After a quick second-round match that she wrapped up in 58 minutes against Tomova, the world No. 1 was a heavy favorite against Elena-Gabriela Ruse this Saturday.
She didn’t really need to dig deep into her resources, as she managed to pull ahead on the scoreboard at 2-1 in the first set before securing a double break to take control with a 6-1 score.
Overwhelmed, Ruse called for a medical timeout to receive treatment for a thigh issue. The Romanian had already faced some physical problems during her previous match against Frech. She tried to continue the match, but at 15-40 on her serve at the start of the second set, Ruse chose to throw in the towel.
With less than two hours spent on the Miami courts, the world No. 1 advances to the quarterfinals, where she will face either Rebeka Masarova or defending champion Danielle Collins.
