Gauff Ousts Bencic and Advances to Quarterfinals in Madrid
Gauff faced Switzerland's Bencic for the third time in the round of 16 of a tournament this year, following the Australian Open and Indian Wells. She won with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Despite converting only a quarter of her break points (2/8), Gauff took the first set with strong efficiency on her first serves (86%). The world No. 4 then dominated the second set to secure the match in 1 hour and 23 minutes.
The American avenged her earlier loss to the Swiss player at Indian Wells (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). She also improved on her performance from last year in Madrid, where she fell in the round of 16.
Next, she will face the winner of the match between Andreeva and Starodubtseva.
