Hady Habib, first Lebanese player to win a Grand Slam match
Hady Habib wrote his name into Lebanese tennis history on Sunday, becoming the first player from his country to win a Grand Slam match.
The 219th-ranked player in the world, who had made it out of the qualifying rounds this week, continued his winning ways by beating Yunchaokete Bu, ranked 65th in the world, in three sets (7-6, 6-4, 7-6) in the 1st round.
Habib, who benefited from the great atmosphere on court 6, was very emotional after his victory and took the opportunity to celebrate by displaying a Lebanese flag (see video below).
In a post-match interview, he was obviously proud to have achieved this feat: "It's the greatest achievement of my career. It's an incredible feeling to have this victory, not only for myself, but also for my country.
As you could see, the crowd went crazy. It made this victory even more special. It's a great victory, especially in the times we've been through as a country.
It's nice to bring something positive, especially after the difficulties we've had because of the war."
In the 2nd round, Hady Habib will face French No.1 Ugo Humbert.
