"He experienced tennis in a different way," Sinner pays tribute to his compatriot Fognini
After a career spanning over 20 years, Fognini decided to hang up his racket following one final high-level match against world No. 2 Alcaraz at Wimbledon. Known for his unique playing style, the Italian left behind countless memorable moments for tennis fans.
Asked by SuperTennis, his compatriot and world No. 1, Sinner, joined many other players in paying tribute to him:
"He had an incredible career. He’s a player who experienced tennis in a different way, as he felt it. I think that’s the best message he could give. Not everyone lives it the same way. With unbelievable talent, he won many tournaments. He has a beautiful family at home.
Now, obviously, a new life begins, and I naturally wish him all the best. We hope to see him around—for us Italians, it’s always a pleasure to see him. I saw him in the locker room before my match, and he still brings great energy. I can only congratulate him for everything and wish him good luck for the future."
With over 800 matches played, including 426 wins, Fognini notably claimed an ATP 500 title (Hamburg, 2013) and an ATP 1000 crown (Monte-Carlo, 2019). The latter achievement later propelled him into the top 10 for the first time in his career (No. 9).
