"Here, Everyone Suffers": Medvedev Opens Up After Reaching Shanghai Round of 16
At times scrappy but solid overall, Daniil Medvedev notched another victory in Shanghai. The Russian, clear-eyed about his fitness level, discussed the heat and his pleasure in "suffering like the other players."
Having qualified for the Shanghai round of 16, Daniil Medvedev seems to be somewhat reassured about his level of play after several months of doubts and underperformances.
For the second time after Beijing, the Russian defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, treating the crowd to some spectacular shots along the way.
During the on-court post-match interview, he was asked about the stifling conditions in Shanghai:
"Yes, it wasn't easy. When the temperature goes above 28 degrees, I suffer a lot. And since here everyone suffers, it puts me in somewhat the same condition as the others.
I could have played a little better; it was a bit messy in the second set. But I'm satisfied with my game at the moment and happy to win, of course."
In the round of 16, Medvedev will face Learner Tien again, just over a week after their semifinal clash in Beijing.
