Humbert Overcomes Jarry to Reach Round of 16 at Munich Tournament

Seeded fourth at the ATP 500 tournament in Munich, Ugo Humbert made a strong start in Bavaria. The Frenchman, last seen with a bandage on his right hand during the Monte-Carlo Masters (where he fell in the first round to Alexei Popyrin), was fully present in Germany and held his ground against Nicolas Jarry.
Returning from injury in early April after a four-week absence due to a toe issue, the Chilean has yet to fully regain his form. On a four-match losing streak before facing the world No. 21, last year's Rome finalist continued his rough patch.
Despite a solid start, Jarry couldn’t maintain his rhythm against Humbert. With 15 winners in the first set, the Frenchman quickly pulled ahead by converting his only break point of the set—enough to take the lead.
Humbert’s response was swift. More consistent on serve, the Metz native returned the favor. After earning seven break points throughout the set, he converted one, allowing him to level the match and force a decisive third set.
In the final set, Humbert took control early. Leading 5-0, he served for the match, but Jarry showed pride to avoid a bagel. Still, the deficit proved too great to overcome.
In the end, Ugo Humbert triumphed after 2 hours and 20 minutes (4-6, 6-3, 6-2), advancing to the round of 16 where he will face Fabian Marozsan. The Hungarian, meanwhile, defeated German wildcard Justin Engel, 17 years old and ranked 347th, in two quick sets (6-4, 6-1).
With this win, Humbert claims his first clay-court victory since the opening round of the Paris Olympics last summer, where he had beaten… Fabian Marozsan on July 28, 2024, before falling to Francisco Cerundolo.
