Ugo Humbert battled for two hours to beat Brandon Nakashima.
The French No.1 needed three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) to see off the American in his opening match of the Paris Masters 1000.
A victory achieved thanks to a very good percentage behind his first service ball (84% of points won) and solid play throughout the match, with only three break points conceded.
In the next round, Humbert will face Marcos Giron. An opponent within reach for the Frenchman, who is surely eyeing a possible 3rd round meeting with Carlos Alcaraz.
