"I am very surprised that he is so good," McEnroe's words on Sinner's progress
In an interview shared by Tennis World Italia, former champion John McEnroe analyzed the progress of world number one Jannik Sinner. According to him, even though the Italian had a lot of potential, he did not imagine him reaching such a level so quickly.
"I knew his coach, Riccardo Piatti, who did an excellent job with him when he was young—he really sensed his potential. Additionally, Darren Cahill was an excellent choice, as he is one of the greatest coaches you can find across all sports.
He coached Agassi, Halep, Hewitt. He did a great job with Jannik, making him change his serve and become more confident. It's incredible, because Sinner is playing at a level I did not expect to be so high at this stage of his career. I am very surprised that he is so good.
I have been following him for years; he is a fantastic guy. He faced many problems with the issue we all know about. The truth is, there was a lot of pressure at the US Open when he was there last year. He handled the situation very well. Then the situation was similar in Australia, and he won again. There too, he handled it very well. It's truly extraordinary."
Currently at the US Open to defend his title, Sinner will face showman Bublik for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Sinner's significant improvement is related to improving his serve, but mostly from bringing Cahill on board.
