"I can't imagine how difficult it must be to come back from pregnancy," Swiatek praises Bencic ahead of their Wimbledon clash
Iga Swiatek has reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in her career. On Wednesday, the Polish player, who is competing on her least favored surface, confirmed her progress on grass after defeating Liudmila Samsonova (6-2, 7-5).
A finalist in Bad Homburg just before the tournament, the five-time Grand Slam champion is now just one step away from the final in London. To get there, she will have to overcome Belinda Bencic, who is returning to a very promising level after being absent from the tour due to a happy life event.
Swiatek spoke about the Swiss player ahead of their showdown, as the two women, who were on court yesterday, will face each other in the semifinals this Thursday on the London grass.
"I still think I had a very good tournament here in 2023. I played well, but I couldn’t go further than the quarterfinals. This year, I feel I’ve improved on grass as a player, I’m training well.
My confidence is growing match by match. I’m very happy with what I’ve done on the court, and I’m really proud of myself. I have a lot of respect for Belinda (Bencic).
I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to come back from pregnancy. We trained together at the United Cup this year. She’s gradually finding her rhythm again. She has a game that can help her win on grass.
I never doubted that she could return after her pregnancy. She’s in good form and playing really well," Swiatek told Tennis Up To Date after securing her spot in the semifinals.
