I didn’t even know the Hopman Cup was happening," says Fritz
Taylor Fritz is in Washington, where he is the top seed. During a press conference, he discussed the length of the tennis calendar and expressed understanding for players who withdrew from the Toronto Masters 1000.
He stated: "It’s a complex, strange issue when you look at recent years. Almost all players have probably been asking for a shorter season for a while now… but we just keep extending it further, adding events, increasing breaks, and even making tournaments longer.
I saw that the Hopman Cup took place this summer after Wimbledon. Honestly, I didn’t even know that tournament was happening.
There were players like Félix Auger-Aliassime or Flavio Cobolli in the draw after playing a Grand Slam like Wimbledon, and one of them had an incredible run.
When you think about it, it’s crazy—we just keep adding more events to the calendar, over and over. It’s interesting how we can shorten certain things, like gaps between tournaments, but we can’t seem to shorten the actual season itself, with weeks without events.
I’d love to see the schedule tightened up and have an extra week, to shorten the season, but I don’t understand why there’s so much tennis, so many tournaments still ahead.
