"I don't want to talk about the absent ones": Volandri sets the record straight after the Italian triple in the Davis Cup
For the third year in a row Italy triumphed in the Davis Cup final, this time victorious over a valiant Spanish team.
After two editions won in Malaga, this time it was in Bologna, in front of their home crowd, that the Squadra Azzurra wrote a page in the competition's history.
In a press conference, captain Filippo Volandri spoke about this title which naturally has a special flavor:
"It's an incredible feeling. Yes, we have won three Davis Cups, but this one is really different, in front of our fans, in our country. For my part, I didn't cry during the other two successes, but this time, yes. It means a lot to me.
I just have to thank the guys. They put in an incredible effort. We should all be proud of them. It's a beautiful trophy."
Questioned again about the absences of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, the captain sharply refocused the debate:
"I said it a week before the competition: I did not want to talk about those who are not here. I only talk about those who are here.
You can have the world number one... or not. What makes the difference? As Matteo (Berrettini) said, it's our team spirit.
We also have great players. For example, Luciano Darderi, world number 26, is not here. All of them would deserve to be part of the team, but I can only choose five."
After this historic triple, Italy will once again be placed among the favorites for the final phase of the competition in 2026.
