"I feel bad for not replying to him," Gauff's funny anecdote about Alcaraz
Coco Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz perfectly represent the youth in today's tennis and are the standard-bearers of the new generation that has taken over the main tour in recent years.
The American, the world No. 2 at just 21 years old, has won the 2023 US Open and the 2024 WTA Finals, among other titles, in her young career. As for the Spaniard, he became the youngest world No. 1 in history in 2022 and already has four Grand Slam titles to his name.
In an interview with Bleacher Report, the Atlanta native shared an anecdote about Alcaraz, who had sent her a private message on social media after Gauff's run at Wimbledon in 2019, where she reached the fourth round at just 15 years old.
At the time, she had stunned everyone by defeating Venus Williams, Magdalena Rybarikova, and Polona Hercog before falling to the eventual tournament winner, Simona Halep (all after coming through qualifying).
"My funniest private message? I had done well at Wimbledon in 2019, and Alcaraz sent me a message saying, 'Hey Coco, do you remember me?'
"Apparently, we had both won the Junior Fed Cup (and Junior Davis Cup for him) around the same time for our respective countries. But I didn’t remember him, so I didn’t reply.
"Of course, a few years later, he won the US Open. I sent him a private message to congratulate him. If you look at our private conversation, you’ll see a 'Do you remember me?' and a 'Congratulations.' I feel bad for not replying to him," Gauff admitted.
