"I knew this guy was going to be good—he wouldn’t let anything bother him," Kyrgios talks about Sinner
Nick Kyrgios is an unconventional figure in the tennis world. A former ATP top 15 player, the Australian, who has been frequently injured since 2022, hasn’t played many tournaments in the last three years but still manages to make headlines.
Since the announcement of Jannik Sinner’s positive test for clostebol in March 2024, Kyrgios has been vocal in the media and on social networks about the Italian, whom he doesn’t hold in high regard.
Suspended for three months at the start of the year, Sinner later returned to the ATP tour, reaching the finals of Rome, Roland-Garros, and Wimbledon (this Sunday against Alcaraz). Speaking to TalkSport, the 30-year-old Kyrgios reflected on the nature of his relationship with Sinner in recent years.
"What’s funny is that we actually had a good relationship before the suspension came down. We played against each other, and everything was fine. In Miami (in 2022), it was like we were at the zoo! I got three warnings and almost got disqualified.
It was hilarious because I was going crazy during that match—the crowd was like at a football game—and Sinner was just sitting there so calmly, like nothing was happening.
I knew this guy was going to be good because he was already so mentally strong. He wouldn’t let anything rattle him. He was so composed. He didn’t fall into my trap. Honestly, we had a decent relationship before his suspension.
Now, it’s very likely we’ll never speak to each other again," admitted Nick Kyrgios, who is set to make his competitive return in Washington (a tournament he has won twice) in the coming days.
