I should have signed him earlier, I wasted my time," Tsitsipas discusses Ivanisevic
Now ranked 26th in the world, Stefanos Tsitsipas recently brought on Goran Ivanisevic to help him climb back up the rankings.
During a press conference at Wimbledon, the Greek player spoke about their new collaboration, as reported by *Punto de Break*: "I knew that at this stage of my career, I needed a coach who had played at the highest level and who fully understood what was going on in my head.
I thought it would be difficult to start working with him after so many years without an outside voice in my team, but we’ve been very honest with each other.
I’m completely open to criticism, no matter how harsh. I want to hear every truth he has to tell me; I’m open-minded and ready to explore my game.
Goran never lies. From day one, he told me things as he saw them; he didn’t sugarcoat anything. I don’t want someone who tries to please me, who doesn’t challenge me, who gives me direct information without overwhelming or angering me.
He’s not my father. Goran and I aspire to achieve great things together. I know I’m not perfect, but he’s helping me understand why things haven’t been working for so long and what I can do to improve.
I should have signed him three or four years ago; I feel like I wasted my time sticking to the same methods—I didn’t progress as a player.
Our work will soon pay off, though we don’t have specific expectations. I know he respects me, likes me, and cares about what I do; I see it in his eyes and the way he speaks to me.
