"I was promised things that weren't delivered," Fernandez criticizes Montreal tournament organization after her defeat

Fresh off her title win in Washington last week, Leylah Fernandez couldn't continue her momentum at the WTA 1000 in Montreal. The Canadian fell to Maya Joint (6-4, 6-1) in front of her home crowd, just a week after defeating the same opponent in the first round in the U.S. capital.
During her post-match press conference, the 22-year-old player—who climbed to No. 24 in the world after her Washington triumph—had a message for the Montreal tournament organizers.
"I have no idea what happened. It was a tough match, Maya (Joint) played incredibly well, she was very solid from the start. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for me.
It was amazing to be on the court, to hear the crowd and feel their support. It was incredible, and I truly mean that. I’m disappointed with my level of play, and it wasn’t fair to them. It was a very, very low level.
I was made promises about the schedule that weren’t kept—they told me I might play the night match. That hurt a bit because I really wanted to play in the evening session.
Other than that, the crowd was simply incredible. It moved me. I’ve never felt that kind of energy before, and it was an honor, something really fun," Fernandez told *Punto De Break*.
