I wasn't in control of the situation," Swiatek reflects on her 2022 US Open victory
Iga Swiatek, in an interview with her partner Tecnifibre, discussed her 2022 US Open triumph, her only one so far in New York.
She recounts her final match against Ons Jabeur and the emotions it brought: "I remember this tournament very well, compared to others. Even compared to Roland Garros, which I won. The start wasn't very easy; the first matches were very tough.
Before the final, I wasn't even that nervous because I was already tired. I just wanted to focus on playing effectively.
I played against Ons Jabeur in the final, so I knew it would be a very physically demanding match. She uses a lot of slices, drop shots—you have to run a lot.
But she is steady from the baseline. I'm glad I was able to win in two sets, because if I had to play a third, it would have been very exhausting. I don't know if I could have held on.
When I won Roland Garros for the first time, I was thinking about what would happen after match point; I felt like I was in control of the situation. But at the US Open, no, that wasn't the case.
It was a tie-break, and every point mattered. Until the very end of the match, it wasn't over. I just kept playing.
