"I will have to significantly improve next year," Zverev reacts after his new disappointment at the US Open
Alexander Zverev still will not win his first Grand Slam at the US Open this year. The German, world number 3, fell in the third round against Félix Auger-Aliassime in four sets (4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4) and will not compete in the round of 16.
Already defeated in the first round by Arthur Rinderknech at Wimbledon, Zverev is the first top 3 player to lose before the second week in two consecutive Majors since Rafael Nadal 20 years ago. In 2005, the Spaniard had won Roland-Garros before losing in the second round at Wimbledon and the third round at the US Open.
"I had no feel for the balls, it was the same thing last year in this tournament. It was also the case in my first two rounds, I didn't have good sensations.
And when you play against a player like Félix (Auger-Aliassime), you have to know how to be aggressive at certain moments, but it was impossible because I wasn't feeling the ball well. Facing a player of such a level, it immediately becomes complicated.
In the second set, I was unlucky. I had a chance to win it and lead two sets to zero, but then everything changed. The playing conditions don't change much, but the balls are very different... But that's no excuse.
What is certain is that I will have to significantly improve next year. I need to find something to make me a better tennis player here because I've been playing poorly in New York for two years. It's been a disappointing year in the Grand Slams," Zverev told Punto de Break.
