I’m proud of myself because no one expected it," Swiatek basks in joy after her first Wimbledon title
Iga Swiatek added a sixth Grand Slam to her trophy cabinet by winning Wimbledon for the first time in her career this Saturday.
Dominating Amanda Anisimova in the final (6-0, 6-0), the Polish player managed to rediscover her best form on a surface that had previously been her weakness. A performance that surprised even herself, as she explained to the media:
"Seeing myself as a champion is something surreal. I savored every minute. I’m proud of myself because no one expected it. It’s been a season with a lot of ups and downs and a lot of external pressure. I feel like tennis keeps surprising me, and I surprise myself. I’m very happy with this whole process."
Swiatek was also asked about her favorite Grand Slam victory, having now won Roland-Garros, the US Open, and now Wimbledon:
"That’s a very tough question. I don’t really know… But the fact that it’s on grass makes this victory more special and also unexpected. I think the emotions are bigger.
At Roland-Garros, I know I can play well and prove it every year. Here, I wasn’t so sure. I also needed to prove it to myself. I won’t rank my titles because I have a lot of respect for the other tournaments.
I worked very hard to win the other Grand Slams. It doesn’t make sense to pick one over the others. But this one and the US Open are more enjoyable because no one expected them. It wasn’t a relief. It was mostly great tennis and hard work to get there, with no pressure on my shoulders.
