Instead of saving his energy, he plays doubles to give his brother a gift?", Bertolucci questions Berrettini's injury
Absent for 4 years, Berrettini made his return at home in Rome. While his start was rather successful with a win against Fearnley, the Italian had to withdraw against Ruud in the next round due to an abdominal relapse.
Questioned by the media outlet Fanpage, Bertolucci questioned the choice of the world No. 28 to play doubles with his brother Jacopo alongside singles:
"What heart. Berrettini's brother is not up to such a tournament. Matteo already has physical problems: instead of saving his energy, he plays doubles to give his brother a gift? Then he withdrew from singles, it didn't make sense. I would have first thought about singles and only if I was good, about doubles.
You can't start in Madrid, where you withdrew, and play a doubles match that ends late. It's not the best choice. Then, on a family level, everyone manages as they see fit, but I'm not convinced.
