It was probably the last point of my career," Cornet considers retiring again
Alizé Cornet made her return to the WTA tour in early April after an initial retirement that lasted almost a year.
The French player had set herself the goal of playing in the Wimbledon qualifiers and entering the main draw, but she was defeated this Thursday in the third round by Elsa Jacquemot.
Speaking to *L'Équipe*, she admitted that this loss could convince her to end her career once again, just three months after announcing her comeback:
"Ten days ago, I would have signed up to play three matches here in the Wimbledon qualifiers. It was a great week. My goal was to reconnect with tennis, and during these three matches, I was fully into it. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose—that’s sports—but there was no suffering. […]
It was probably the last point of my career, I don’t know. I’m really doing this based on how I feel. There’s little chance I’ll return for the hardcourt season and play the US Open qualifiers. Hardcourt is an extremely demanding surface, and I don’t know if I have the drive.
It’s not impossible that I’ll play some smaller tournaments at the end of the year. Let’s say for the next month and a half, it’s curtains. But beyond that, nothing is set in stone. I’m really doing this based on my desire and what my body can handle.
