"It's no accident you're the best in the world" - Fritz's speech after his Tokyo final defeat
Despite his ambition, Taylor Fritz stumbled, like many other players before him, against Carlos Alcaraz in the final of an ATP tournament (Tokyo, 6-4, 6-4). Even though his performance was far from bad, the American came up against an opponent who was simply too strong.
Asked on court during the traditional post-tournament awards ceremony, Fritz stated:
"Congratulations to Carlos on his tournament. It's no accident you're the best player in the world. Thank you to my team, sorry for what happened. It was still a good week. Thank you to the entire organization and thank you to the fans: it's truly a great tournament."
A respectful and clear-headed speech from the world number 5 who hopes his time will come. For reference, he was seeking his second career ATP 500 title.
