Jacquemot Crushes Sakkari and Joins Mertens at the WTA 500 Tournament in Guadalajara
Elsa Jacquemot and Maria Sakkari were both back on the court this Tuesday at the WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara. The two players had been interrupted by rain the day before, while the Frenchwoman was leading 4-1 in the first set.
But the unpredictable weather conditions did not break the momentum of the world number 83. Thus, the 22-year-old Jacquemot won in two sets (6-2, 6-0 in 1 hour 15 minutes) and advanced to the round of 16.
For a spot in the quarterfinals, Jacquemot, who had defeated Maria Sakkari in the first round of Roland-Garros earlier this year before reaching the third round, will face Elise Mertens, the tournament's number 1 seed in Mexico and the world's 22nd-ranked player.
The Belgian, who has won the tournaments in Singapore and 's-Hertogenbosch this season, received a first-round bye and will enter the competition in this second-round match against the Frenchwoman. The two players have never faced each other before.
