Jeanjean defeated by Baptiste in the final round of qualifying at Indian Wells
French tennis will have only two representatives at the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, which begins this Wednesday. They are Caroline Garcia and Varvara Gracheva.
After her victory against Mananchaya Sawangkaew (6-2, 6-4), Léolia Jeanjean could have joined her two compatriots in the main draw, but it ultimately won't be the case.
In the second round of qualifying, the Frenchwoman, ranked 126th in the world, stumbled against Hailey Baptiste (7-6, 6-4) and will not compete in the prestigious Californian tournament.
The American, on her side, will face Whitney Osuigwe, who also came through qualifying, for a spot in the second round where she would meet Danielle Collins if successful.
The news of the night in the women's draw remains the withdrawal of Sloane Stephens, who is injured in her foot and was forced to withdraw. The 2017 US Open champion had received a wild card to enter the draw.
Her first-round opponent, Sofia Kenin, will now face Australian player Maddison Inglis, who passed through two rounds of qualifying.
Among other results, the top seed in qualifying, Kimberly Birrell, defeated Cristina Bucsa, while Eva Lys was dominated by her compatriot Jule Niemeier (6-4, 6-3).
The latter earned the right to face Robin Montgomery. Ajla Tomljanovic benefited from Zeynep Sonmez's withdrawal to enter the main draw, where she will challenge Catherine McNally.
Finally, notable eliminations include Daria Saville, a semifinalist at last week's WTA 500 in Mérida, defeated by Maria Carle, and Taylor Townsend, eliminated by Varvara Lepchenko in two sets.
Defeated in the final round of qualifying by Clervie Ngounoue, Sonay Kartal was given a lucky loser spot and will face Lepchenko.
