Kasatkina on her nationality change: "I didn’t really have a choice"
Daria Kasatkina has formalized her change of nationality and will now represent Australia instead of Russia.
This change is largely due to her homosexuality, something that is poorly accepted in Russia, where the LGBT movement is considered extremist.
In comments relayed by Ubitennis, she explained her decision: "Honestly, with everything happening in my former country, I didn’t really have a choice.
Australia is where I feel I can be myself, and I’m truly very happy to have the privilege of being part of this beautiful country.
I think it’s obvious to say that Australia is a very welcoming, open-minded country.
Everyone is welcome here. And as I said, Tennis Australia also took a step toward me. Together, we went through this entire process.
And of course, without their support and initiative, I don’t think this would have been possible. So I’m very grateful to them. And yes, everything happened quite quickly, and I’m really thrilled about it."
